The Lincoln Figure Skating Club was founded in 1959 by members like Judy Cobb, Mel Carr, and Sandy Isley. They skated at the Pershing Auditorium when they held indoor ice skating sessions. The club had a short life, dissolving in the 1960s.
In 1988, hockey and figure skating enthusiasts formed the Lincoln Ice Skating Association (LISA). One of LISA's main goals was to build a permanent indoor ice facility, and they even succeeded in getting a bond issue on a city election ballot. They also secured 501(c)3 tax-exempt status to accept donations for the rink.
When the Ice Box opened in 1996 to host the Lincoln Stars hockey team, the Lincoln Ice Hockey Association (LIHA) formed. Meanwhile, Judy Cobb led the figure skating community within the Lincoln Ice Skating Association (LISA), and they became a U.S. Figure Skating (USFS) member club. The figure skating club then changed its name to Star City Figure Skating Club. For years, SCFSC successfully taught the Learn to Skate USA Program at the Ice Box and officially introduced figure skating as a sport in Lincoln.
When John Breslow Ice Hockey Center opened in 2015, it became the home rink of SCFSC. The rink management took over the Learn to Skate program, hiring SCFSC instructors to coach the classes.
In 2017, SCFSC organized the first USFS figure skating competition in Lincoln – Capital City Figure Skating Competition.
By 2018, SCFSC secured recognition of the competition as the official figure skating event in conjunction with the Cornhusker State Games and State Games of America.
Board of Directors
A volunteer board of directors manages the club’s business throughout the year.
The board appoints a nominating committee in the spring of the current season to identify candidates to serve as officers and directors. The Board of Directors manages the day-to-day operations of the SCFSC and meets monthly to discuss topics relevant to the Club’s success. All positions on the Board of Directors are unpaid.
Our Coaches
Our club has qualified coaches and associate coaches in the Lincoln and Omaha areas.
We require that all club coaches complete SkateSafe training and carry their own liability insurance. Skaters or their parents should contact coaches to discuss scheduling and fees for private lessons.
